Three weeks after the first official test of the year at the Sepang International Circuit the MotoGP riders will return to the Malaysian track this week to carry on with the developments of their respective prototypes, ahead of the start of the World Championship season in Qatar on April 11. Scheduled for three days from February 24-26 the opening day on Wednesday will be for test riders only, with Thursday and Friday offering valuable time for the team riders to further the customisation of their 2010 machines. Last year, Japanese manufacturer Yamaha experienced a 28.1 percent drop in revenues. According to officials at Yamaha, the economic slump brought a decrease in sales of motorcycles and marine products both in the home market and overseas in 2009. All these made the Japanese manufacturer consider cost-cutting and reorganization. Yamaha will eliminate 200 positions in the United States and Europe this year in addition to 800 layoffs by the end of October announced earlier this month. The Fiat Yamaha rider has had surgery on right hand following a training accident on Thursday, and will not participate in the next test at Sepang which takes place from February 25-26. Jorge Lorenzo underwent an operation on his right hand on Thursday, after a motocross training accident near Montmeló. The 22 year-old Spanish rider, who was runner-up in the 2009 MotoGP World Championship, fell in a slow corner when doing approximately 30 km/h and hurt his right hand as he landed. The team launched the new design on location at the Sterilgarda headquarters in Castiglione delle Stiviere to an audience of international journalists and sponsors. MotoGP teams have flocked to Sepang this week to test their bikes on the Malaysian track in preparation for the 2010 season. Fiat-Yamaha was on hand to unveil their 2010 YZR-M1, along with riders Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo. Despite Yamaha’s shuddering sales figures, there doesn’t seem to be too many drastic changes in the factory team’s camp, but perhaps the lack of change is indicative of Yamaha’s financial position. The new bike was due to be officially unveiled in the summer as a replacement for the FZ6 Fazer, had until now only been partially revealed with two teaser shots released by Yamaha of just the nose. Yamaha’s plan was to spend another month or so releasing more images but MCN was able to get hold of images before that. As a response Yamaha has released this single official image of the naked FZ8. Riders Cal Crutchlow and James Toseland completed their final day of testing today at the Portimao circuit in Portugal. The two British riders have worked hard over the three days, experiencing a variety of weather conditions from dry to wet to intermediate as they and the team worked through various electronic and bike set ups ahead of the 2010 season. The final session saw Cal fall victim to the drastically reduced grip of the track following yesterday’s rain.
